Giving Unto God Under the New Covenant

Giving Unto God Under the New Covenant

A Biblical Call to Tithes, Offerings, and Honoring the Kingdom of God

Under the New Testament and the New Covenant established through Jesus Christ, believers are called to live lives of obedience, love, sacrifice, and stewardship before God. Giving our tithes and offerings is not merely a religious duty—it is an act of worship, faith, honor, and covenant relationship with our Heavenly Father.

The earth and everything in it belongs to God. As His children, we are entrusted with blessings, provision, talents, increase, and resources so that His Kingdom may continue to spread throughout the earth. The support of the Gospel, the care of the ministry, the help of the poor, and the advancement of God’s work all depend upon faithful giving from the people of God.

We Belong to God Through Christ

The Apostle Paul declared:

“And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
— Galatians 3:29 (KJV)

As heirs through Christ, believers are partakers of the covenant promises of God. Abraham himself was a giver and honored God with tithes long before the Law of Moses was established.

“And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.”
— Genesis 14:20 (KJV)

This reveals that honoring God with substance is a covenant principle rooted in faith and gratitude—not merely legal obligation.

Jesus Taught Us to Give Unto God

When questioned about paying tribute, Jesus spoke these powerful words:

“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.”
— Matthew 22:21 (KJV)
“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”
— Mark 12:17 (KJV)
“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.”
— Luke 20:25 (KJV)

If mankind understands the obligation to pay earthly governments, how much more should the children of God willingly honor the Lord who gives life, breath, salvation, provision, mercy, and eternal hope?

Everything we possess ultimately comes from Him.

“The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”
— Psalm 24:1 (KJV)

Giving Is an Act of Worship and Honor

The Bible teaches us to honor God with our increase:

“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:”
— Proverbs 3:9 (KJV)

When believers give faithfully, they demonstrate trust in God rather than trust in money. Giving reveals where the heart truly is.

Jesus said:

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
— Matthew 6:21 (KJV)

Tithes and offerings are expressions of love, reverence, thanksgiving, and obedience toward God. Under the New Covenant, believers are not called to give grudgingly, but cheerfully and willingly.

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
— 2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV)

Supporting the Work of the Kingdom

God ordained that those who minister the Gospel should be supported through the giving of His people.

“Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.”
— 1 Corinthians 9:14 (KJV)

Giving From Increase and Building the Kingdom

While one-time gifts and special offerings are honorable before God and can greatly bless the work of the ministry, they are not the same as faithful giving from one’s continual increase. Throughout Scripture, God teaches His people to honor Him consistently with the increase He provides.

“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him.”
— 1 Corinthians 16:2 (KJV)

This reveals a pattern of regular stewardship according to God’s blessing and provision. The Kingdom of God does not advance merely through occasional emotional giving, but through faithful, continual obedience from the hearts of God’s people.

The work of the Kingdom requires laborers, ministers, evangelists, teachers, servants, missionaries, helpers, and faithful workers who are equipped to carry out the call of God.

Jesus Himself said:

“The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.”
— Matthew 9:37 (KJV)

A church may possess large sums of money stored away, but if there are no workers being sent, no souls being reached, no ministries being supported, no poor being helped, and no Gospel advancing into the world, then the purpose of Kingdom wealth is being neglected.

Money in itself does not build the Kingdom—obedience does. Resources must become ministry. Provision must become action. Blessings must become opportunities to glorify Christ and reach souls.

The early church did not store up riches while neglecting the needs around them. Instead, they gave so that ministry could flourish and people could be cared for.

“And distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.”
— Acts 4:35 (KJV)

God blesses His people not merely to accumulate, but to become vessels through which His Kingdom can grow upon the earth. Faithful giving from our increase enables the Gospel to be preached, workers to be sent, churches to minister effectively, and the love of Christ to reach those in need.

“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.”
— Luke 12:48 (KJV)

The early church demonstrated sacrificial generosity to ensure that the needs of the ministry and the people were met.

“Neither was there any among them that lacked.”
— Acts 4:34 (KJV)

When believers give, they participate in advancing the Kingdom of God. Souls are reached, ministries continue, the needy are helped, and the Gospel is preached throughout the world.

The Serious Warning Against Robbing God

The Scriptures give a solemn warning regarding withholding from God what belongs to Him.

“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.”
— Malachi 3:8 (KJV)

This passage reveals that failing to honor God with tithes and offerings is not viewed lightly in the eyes of the Lord. It is described as robbing Him.

God does not speak these words to condemn His children, but to awaken their hearts to covenant faithfulness and obedience. He desires trust, surrender, and love from His people.

The Lord continues:

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing.”
— Malachi 3:10 (KJV)

God promises provision, blessing, and care toward those who honor Him faithfully.

Giving Reflects the Heart of Christ

Jesus Himself became the ultimate example of giving.

“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”
— 2 Corinthians 8:9 (KJV)

Christ gave His life for us. Therefore, our giving should never be viewed as a burden, but as a response to His immeasurable love and sacrifice.

When we withhold from God while enjoying His blessings daily, we must examine our hearts carefully. Every breath, every meal, every provision, every opportunity, and every blessing flows from His hand.

A Call to God’s Children

Beloved children of God, the Lord is calling His people back to faithfulness, obedience, and covenant honor. Tithes and offerings are not about manipulation, greed, or obligation—they are about worship, trust, love, and partnership with God’s Kingdom.

May every believer remember:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
— Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

When we place God first in our finances, our priorities, and our hearts, we acknowledge Him as Lord over every area of our lives.

Let us never rob God of what belongs to Him, but instead give joyfully, faithfully, and generously, knowing that everything we have comes from Him and belongs to Him.

“Freely ye have received, freely give.”
— Matthew 10:8 (KJV)

May our giving glorify God, strengthen His Kingdom, and reveal hearts fully surrendered to Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
